Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a DuraFlex chimney liner with a failing top-sealing damper, we can repair or replace it. Our installed price for DuraFlex-compatible damper repair in Los Angeles typically runs between $340 and $690, depending on which damper style you have and whether the mounting collar needs rework. Most jobs are completed in a single visit since we stock the common DuraFlex damper assemblies on the truck. The way owners usually find us: the damper cable snaps, the plate won’t fully close, or cold air starts pouring down the flue in December.

Ashby Chimney Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we install their dampers regularly and keep the repair parts on hand because so many Los Angeles homes have DuraFlex liners already in place.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes two damper families that show up in LA chimneys: the DuraFlex Top-Sealing Damper (round, mounts at the flue crown, typically 6″ to 13″ diameter) and the DuraFlex Lock-Top style energy damper with a cable-operated pull handle. The Top-Sealing Damper seals at the top of the liner with a spring-loaded plate. The cable runs down through the firebox wall to a bracket mounted near the damper throat. If you have a throat damper that was retrofitted into an existing clay flue, you likely have the Top-Sealing model.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see all the time: the damper collar is sized to the liner, not the flue tile around it. So a 6″ DuraFlex liner needs a 6″ damper, even if the old clay flue is 8″ or 9″. If a previous installer bought the damper to match the clay, it won’t seat correctly on the liner top. That’s the first thing we check on a repair call. The model number is stamped on the underside of the damper plate, usually along the rim. If it’s worn off, we measure the outside diameter of the liner and match from there.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for the damper plate and spring assembly, we use DuraFlex OEM parts. The tolerances on the spring tension and the seal gasket are specific, and generic aftermarket plates rarely seat tightly. For the cable and handle bracket, a quality aftermarket retrofit kit from Olympia or Copperfield often works fine and saves you $60-$80. We’ll tell you which is which and put the options in writing before we start.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Cold air drafting down the chimney on mild days. The damper seal gasket has compacted or torn, and the plate isn’t seating flush against the collar. This is the most common failure after about 8-10 years in LA’s dry air, which hardens the gasket faster than humid climates do.
  • The pull cable feels slack or won’t hold. The cable clamp at the firebox bracket has stripped, or the spring that holds tension on the plate has fatigued. You can sometimes re-clamp the cable, but if the spring is gone, the damper won’t stay closed against wind.
  • The handle is stuck in one position. Soot and creosote have gummed the pivot where the cable passes through the frame. This happens faster in wood-burning fireplaces that see heavy use from November through February.
  • A metallic rattle when wind gusts across the chimney top. The damper plate is loose on its hinge pin, or the pivot bolt has backed out. Left alone, the plate can crack at the hinge point and then you’re looking at a full damper replacement instead of a hardware fix.
  • You can see daylight around the damper edge from inside the firebox. The plate is warped or the collar has shifted out of round. This one’s a safety issue because a damper that doesn’t seal lets flue gases, including carbon monoxide, back into the living space on startup.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, expect to pay $340-$480 for a cable and bracket repair on an existing DuraFlex damper, and $520-$690 for a full damper plate and spring assembly replacement. The higher end applies when the damper is 10″ or larger, or when the mounting collar needs to be re-secured to the liner top. The lower end covers a straight swap of a standard 6″ or 8″ plate. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Parts: $120-$260 for OEM DuraFlex plate/spring assemblies; $30-$70 for cable and handle kits.
  • Labor: $180-$340, including rooftop access, removal of the old assembly, mounting, and cable routing through the firebox.
  • Included in every quote: a written price before work begins, a camera check of the liner while we’re up there, and a written guarantee on the repair. If the damper fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and redo it at no charge.

We quote the full number before any work starts, and the invoice matches that number. No “found additional issues” surprise at the end. If we see something that needs attention while we’re on the roof, we’ll show you the photo and let you decide.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one thing you can safely do yourself: check the cable tension at the firebox bracket and take a photo of the damper plate from below with your phone. That photo helps us diagnose before we even arrive. Past that, we draw a firm line. Installing or replacing a DuraFlex damper means working at the top of the flue, on a roof surface, with the liner exposed. A dropped tool into an unlined flue means a liner inspection at best and a cracked tile at worst. The damper spring is under constant tension when installed. If it lets go during removal, it can take a finger with it.

Nathan Corliss grew up in Atwater Village, where half the Craftsman bungalows have fireplaces that were retrofitted with liners in the 1990s. He’s been pulling damper assemblies off Los Angeles rooftops for eighteen years and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells neighbors: this is a one-hour repair for someone with the right gear and the right parts on the truck. For everyone else, it’s a Saturday lost and a trip to urgent care with a reason you won’t want to explain. If your DuraFlex damper isn’t sealing, call us at (213) 652-7061 and we’ll get it sorted.
