Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Sweep in Los Angeles: What to Know First
We’re an independent HeatShield service provider in Los Angeles, and yes, we sweep and inspect HeatShield-lined chimneys every week. Most HeatShield chimney sweeps run between $189 and $329 depending on flue height, creosote load, and whether it’s been more than two seasons since the last cleaning. We book within a window we keep, hand you a written price before anything starts, and we know HeatShield’s ceramic coating well enough to spot trouble a general sweep might miss. If you own a HeatShield-lined chimney in Los Angeles, this page tells you what actually needs attention and what you can stop worrying about. How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a good product, but it’s not magic. Here’s what we actually see on HeatShield-lined chimneys across Los Angeles, and what we do about it.
- CeCure sleeve joints blistering at the seam. The CeCure line uses a ceramic-fiber sleeve soaked in HeatShield’s Cerfractory sealant. On older installs in LA, we find blistering where the sleeve seam faced the flue’s hot side. Cause is usually a first-year fire season that ran hotter than the installer expected. Our fix is a seam patch with HeatShield’s own repair compound when the underlying sleeve is sound, or a re-sleeve quote when it isn’t. We send pictures before we touch anything.
- Joint compound flaking on flues that vent gas logs. Gas log sets burn cooler, which sounds fine, but the constant low heat and moisture cycling loosens the joint compound on HeatShield’s Foam application. In Sherman Oaks and Studio City we see this often on homes with vented gas logs. We clean the flue, document every flake with the camera, and resurface only if the coating has actually separated. If it’s just surface dust, we tell you so and leave it alone.
- Creosote bonding to the ceramic surface after a wet burn season. HeatShield’s finish is smoother than raw clay tile, but not slick. After two or three seasons in a damp chimney, stage-two creosote can bond to it like tar. This is common in the older Craftsman bungalows of Atwater Village and Highland Park, where chimneys often lack a proper cap. We remove it with a rotary brush and solvent cleaner rated for ceramic-coated flues, then quote you a chimney cap if you don’t have one.
- Liner separation behind the firebox damper. The HeatShield application starts above the smoke shelf, which means the transition area behind the damper is a common failure point. Shifting from Santa Ana wind pressure cycles can crack the coating where it meets the clay tile. Our camera spots this in about ten seconds. The fix is a localized patch, not a full reline, and we’ll show you the video before quoting it.
- Aftermarket patch mismatches from previous service calls. We see chimneys where someone used a generic refractory cement on a HeatShield liner. It usually doesn’t bond and starts crumbling within a year. We remove the bad patch, prep the surface, and use material matched to HeatShield’s chemistry. The brand of patching compound matters more than most homeowners realize.

Our HeatShield Chimney Sweep Process
Here’s how a HeatShield job goes when you call Ashby Chimney Los Angeles. No surprises, no mystery charges.
- 1
Call and schedule. You reach a person, not a phone tree. We ask the basics: last sweep, fireplace type, anything worrying you. If you know it’s a HeatShield liner, we note it before we arrive.
- 2
We show up in the window. Uniformed, background-checked technician. We lay down drop cloths and set up the HEPA vac before anything else.
- 3
Camera inspection first. We run a camera up the flue before the brush touches it. On a HeatShield liner, this tells us the coating’s condition, the creosote grade, and whether there’s anything that needs a repair quote instead of just a cleaning.
- 4
Written price before work. After the camera, we tell you exactly what the sweep costs and whether we found anything that needs attention. You approve the number before we start. If we recommend a patch or resurface, you get photos and a written quote.
- 5
The sweep itself. Rotary brush and HEPA vacuum, sized to the flue. On HeatShield liners we use plastic or poly brushes, never steel, so the ceramic surface isn’t scarred. Firebox, smoke shelf, damper, and ash pit get cleaned too.
- 6
Post-sweep report and guarantee. We hand you a written report with before-and-after photos and a written guarantee on any repair work. If a covered repair fails, we come back and fix it free under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Sweep Costs in Los Angeles
Say the price first, put the promise in writing, and leave the firebox cleaner than you found it. That’s how we work, so here are the numbers for HeatShield chimneys.
- Standard sweep, clean flue: $189 to $229. One flue, normal creosote, working damper, fireplace or wood stove.
- Heavy creosote removal (stage two or three): $249 to $329. Takes longer and uses chemical treatment plus repeated brush passes. More common on HeatShield liners that have gone two-plus seasons without service.
- Sweep plus camera inspection report: Included. We don’t charge extra to show you what we saw. The camera report is part of the job.
- HeatShield patch or seam repair: $150 to $450 depending on location and size. Quoted separately, in writing, with video or photos before you approve anything.
- Full re-sleeve or resurfacing: $2,800 to $6,500 depending on flue height and access. We’ll tell you honestly if your liner has years left and doesn’t need this yet.
What moves the price: flue height, creosote grade, roof access difficulty, and whether we find repair work during the camera inspection. Nothing gets added without a written quote and your signature. Call (213) 652-7061 for an exact number, estimates are free.
Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Los Angeles for HeatShield Work
We’ve been at this since 2002, and Nathan Corliss grew up in Atwater Village, so he knows the old LA fireplaces and the newer HeatShield liners installed in them. When we arrive for a HeatShield job, we know what the coating should look like and what it shouldn’t. If we find a repair that needs a different brand, we source quality materials from companies we trust, including DuraFlex and Gelco. Our techs are background-checked and uniformed, so there’s no mystery about who’s in your home. Every repair is covered by a written guarantee under the Kingswell Guarantee, and if it fails, we return at no charge. That’s not a promotion; it’s the way we’ve worked for over twenty years. Each Ashby location is independently owned and operated under the Kingswell Guarantee, and ours is Ashby Chimney Los Angeles. We’re not a national chain and we’re not a two-truck operation. We’re the local crew that answers the phone at one in the morning during Santa Ana season and tells you whether to light the fire or leave it cold.
FAQs
Once a year if you burn regularly during the November-to-March season. HeatShield liners don’t change the creosote equation much, you’re still burning wood and producing combustion byproducts. If you burn only occasionally, every other year is usually enough, but we recommend an annual camera check either way. Call (213) 652-7061 and we’ll tell you what your usage pattern actually requires.
Only if the sweep uses steel brushes or wire tools that scar the ceramic coating. A proper sweep with poly brushes and a HEPA vacuum does not void any HeatShield warranty. We document our tooling and process in the written report for exactly this reason. If you’ve had steel brushes run through a HeatShield liner by another company, we’ll show you the damage on camera.
Usually yes, if the damage is localized. We see a lot of Los Angeles chimneys where the HeatShield coating has failed in one spot, often at the seam or behind the damper, while the rest of the liner is intact. A patch matched to HeatShield’s chemistry runs $150 to $450 and lasts when the surrounding material is sound. If the coating is failing in multiple places, we’ll tell you plainly that patching is throwing money at a liner that’s done, and we’ll show you the video so you can see it yourself.
During the fall and early winter, we typically schedule within three to seven days. If you’ve got a chimney fire risk or visible smoke backup, tell us when you call and we’ll move you up. We don’t promise same-day, but we do answer the phone when you call, and we’ll tell you the truth about what’s urgent and what can wait. The number is (213) 652-7061.
Maybe, maybe not. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, so we don’t make money from telling you to replace a liner that’s fine. Cracked clay tile behind a HeatShield application often doesn’t need replacement if the coating is intact. Get a camera inspection and ask to see the video. If a company tells you your liner is shot but won’t show you pictures, call us for a second opinion. We’ll show you everything on a screen and let you make the call.
