Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Gelco flue liner replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $1,800 to $4,200 installed, depending on liner diameter, length, and whether the old liner fights you on the way out. We stock Gelco-compatible liners on the truck and can usually complete the swap in a single visit. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably just did: a chimney inspection that surfaced a cracked liner, or a water stain on the ceiling near the chase, or rust flakes gathering behind the firebox damper.
Here’s the straight version. A flue liner is the clay or steel tube that vents combustion gases out of your home. When it fails, those gases and excess heat find other places to go. That’s the whole problem in one sentence.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes flexible stainless steel liners, most commonly the 316Ti alloy in diameters of 4, 5, 5.5, 6, 7, and 8 inches. If your original install used Gelco, the liner tag is usually fixed to the top plate or taped inside the chimney chase. We match by measuring the current liner’s inner diameter and total rise, not just by the tag, because settling and heat cycling can distort an older liner’s advertised spec.
The compatibility gotcha with Gelco specifically is the coupling system. Gelco’s lock seam uses a specific band-and-collar connection that doesn’t always play nice with DuraFlex or HeatShield end fittings, even at the same listed diameter. We carry Gelco connectors and caps on the truck for exactly this reason. If your system is beyond the connector’s serviceable life, we’ll say so and quote the full liner replacement instead of patching a seam that’ll fail again.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Rust staining or streaks on the exterior chimney chase. This usually means condensation inside the liner is bleeding through the masonry or framing, and condensation is the number one killer of steel liners in Los Angeles’s marine-layer mornings.
- A smell like a damp campfire inside the living room, even when the fireplace is cold. That’s creosote or combustion residue seeping back through a pinhole or seam separation in the liner wall.
- Flakes of metal or ceramic debris behind the damper. The liner is shedding material. Once it starts shedding, the failure is structural, not cosmetic.
- Visible gaps or waviness at the liner seams. Heat expansion and contraction loosen the lock seam over time. A wavy seam line is a gap waiting to happen.
- Higher utility bills with no other explanation. A failed liner lets conditioned air escape up the flue 24 hours a day. In Los Angeles, that’s your furnace heat running more often between December and February.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
The number depends on three things: liner diameter, flue length, and whether we’re dealing with an existing chase that’s actually straight. Most Gelco flue liner replacements in Los Angeles fall in the $1,800 – $4,200 range, parts and labor included, written as a flat price before we touch anything. Here’s how that breaks down:
- Liner (Gelco 316Ti, sized to your flue): $600 – $1,400 depending on diameter and length
- Connectors, top plate, and cap: $250 – $600
- Labor and installation: $800 – $1,700, including cutting the old liner out and cleaning the chase
- Optional insulation wrap (recommended for chimneys over 25 ft): $300 – $500
Every replacement gets a written price before work starts, and the Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair for one year. If the liner fails in that window, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s the entire point of the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the visible signs: rust streaks on the chase, debris behind the damper, any water staining on the ceiling near the chimney. You can measure the firebox opening if you want a rough idea of liner diameter. What you shouldn’t do is pull or cut a steel liner yourself. A 20 to 35 foot section of spring-loaded stainless steel under tension is a serious injury risk, and the seam connections need a second set of hands and proper lifting equipment. If you get the liner halfway out and it binds, you’re stuck holding a very heavy, very sharp ribbon of steel.

FAQs
A Gelco 316Ti liner installed correctly in the LA climate typically lasts 15 to 20 years, though marine-layer condensation in coastal neighborhoods can shorten that. If you’re past year 15 and seeing rust stains, it’s time for a camera inspection.
Small pinholes near the top can sometimes be patched, but any seam separation or collapsing section means replacement. We’ll show you the camera footage and give you a straight recommendation, and if the repair can safely wait a season, we’ll tell you that too. Call (213) 652-7061 for a free estimate.
Most single-flue Gelco liner replacements are completed in one visit, typically 4 to 6 hours from setup to cleanup. Taller chases or stubborn old liners can push it to a second morning, and we’ll tell you before we start.
Yes. We carry Gelco liners in common diameters plus connectors, caps, and top plates. We’ll confirm the exact parts we need during the estimate visit, so there’s no surprise second trip.
