Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We install HeatShield flue liner repair and replacement systems across Los Angeles, with most complete liner restorations running between $2,800 and $6,500 depending on flue length, access, and the condition of the existing clay liner underneath. If your HeatShield product has cracked, delaminated, or separated at a seam, we can usually get a camera down the flue and give you a written quote within a day or two of your call. Most Los Angeles homeowners find out theirs has failed the same way: a chimney sweep runs a camera during a Level 2 inspection, or someone notices fine ceramic dust collecting at the base of the firebox.
Here’s the straight version: HeatShield is a resurfacing system that’s pumped or troweled into an existing flue, not a standalone metal liner. When it fails, the fix isn’t a patch. It’s a re-application, a section replacement, or a decision that the flue has moved past what resurfacing can save. We’ll show you the camera footage before we recommend any of it, and the price we quote is the price on the invoice.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield comes in two primary systems: CeCure, a ceramic-cement based resurfacing compound used for clay flue liners with minor cracking or gaps, and Cerfractory, a higher-temp blend for more extensive restoration that effectively re-lines the flue from inside. The replacement product you need depends on which one was originally applied and what the camera shows us now.
The most common compatibility gotcha we see in Los Angeles is this: a homeowner has paperwork saying “HeatShield Cerfractory” but what’s actually in the flue is a patched CeCure job from a previous owner. The systems aren’t interchangeable on the same surface, and putting CeCure over a failed Cerfractory layer will not hold. We identify the existing material by the layer thickness, the surface texture, and the installation pattern visible under inspection. If there’s no record at all, we take a small sample and match it before we quote the replacement.
We’re an independent chimney service company operating under the Kingswell Guarantee. We’re not affiliated with HeatShield directly, but we stock and work with their product lines alongside DuraFlex and Gelco materials for cases where a full stainless steel liner is the smarter call.

Signs Your HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Fine grit or ceramic dust at the damper or firebox floor: The surface of the resurfacing layer is spalling off in small pieces. This means the bond between the HeatShield material and the original clay liner is breaking down, usually from moisture or thermal cycling.
- A visible crack line running vertically inside the flue: HeatShield separates from the clay tile at the seam edges first. A vertical crack at a tile joint means the material is shifting independently of the liner behind it.
- Smoke smell in the house after the fireplace has been cleaned: If the flue was recently swept and the odor persists, the resurfacing has likely pulled away enough to let combustion gases slip between the HeatShield layer and the clay wall.
- White chalky staining on the chimney exterior: Moisture is passing through the flue surface and the masonry. Resurfacing failure lets water intrude and carry the cement compounds outward, leaving that telltale efflorescence.
- A sweep’s brush catches or roughens the surface unexpectedly: During a standard cleaning, the brush should glide. When it hits a rough patch or a void, that’s delamination the camera will confirm.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, full HeatShield Cerfractory replacement on a typical single-story fireplace runs from $3,500 to $5,800. Two-story flues, difficult roof access, or a badly degraded original clay liner can push that toward $6,500. A partial repair of a single delaminated section falls between $900 and $1,800 when the rest of the flue surface is still sound.
- Camera inspection before and after: we don’t quote without seeing the actual flue condition, and we don’t finish without showing you the post-repair footage.
- Written price before work starts: the number we give you at the door is the number on the invoice. If something changes mid-job, we stop and tell you before another dollar gets spent.
- Written guarantee on the replacement: covered under the Kingswell Guarantee with a free second visit inside the guarantee period if anything fails.
- Cleanup included: we work inside the firebox and on the roof, and we leave both cleaner than we found them.
DIY or Call Us?
This is not a DIY product, and we’ll say it plainly: working inside a flue requires a professional camera, proper access equipment, and the training to know when a surface will accept resurfacing and when it won’t. What an owner can safely do is shine a flashlight up from the damper and look for obvious grit, cracking, or discoloration. That tells you whether to make a call. What you shouldn’t do is buy a patch kit online and try to reach anything from the roof. HeatShield application is a tradesman’s job, and done wrong it creates exactly the gap that lets flue gases into the house.

FAQs
In Los Angeles, a properly installed HeatShield Cerfractory system typically lasts 15 to 25 years, though the real variable here is moisture from coastal fog and the thermal shock of Santa Ana-season swings between damp and extremely dry air. Flues that stay dry will outlast flues that don’t, which is why we check the chimney cap and crown during the same visit.
If you suspect yours is nearing the end, call (213) 652-7061 and we’ll take a look.
Yes, if the delamination is localized to one section and the surrounding material is still well bonded, we can grind back the failed area and re-apply HeatShield to that section only. If the separation runs most of the flue length, a partial repair will fail within a season and we’ll tell you that before you spend the money.
Call (213) 652-7061 and we’ll camera the flue and give you an honest read.
Most full replacements in Los Angeles take one full day on site, including setup, surface prep, application, and post-installation camera verification. The material cures enough to use the fireplace within about 48 hours, depending on humidity.

Yes, we stock HeatShield CeCure and Cerfractory materials on our service vehicles, along with DuraFlex and Gelco stainless products for cases where a full metal liner is the better fix. For unusual flue dimensions, we may need a day to bring the right quantity, which we’ll tell you during the quote.
Call (213) 652-7061 and we’ll match the right material to your flue.
The camera tells us. If the original clay liner is largely intact and only shows moderate cracking or gaps, HeatShield resurfacing is usually the right call. If the clay tiles are broken apart, shifted, or missing in sections, our honest recommendation in Los Angeles is often a stainless steel liner from DuraFlex or Gelco, because resurfacing over structurally failed clay will not hold. We stock all three and we’ll show you the footage that supports the recommendation.
